The September Issue

ENG: Today I am going to talk about a film which is mentioned in a book that I am currently reading, called The September Issue (2009). It's actually a documentary about American Vogue’s most anticipated issue which the movie is named after. I saw it the other day and I found it so interesting that I decided to tell you a little bit about it.

In the movie, you will see Vogue's work environment and the little obstacles they have to face in order to keep the biggest issue of the year going. In this case, the September 2007 with Sienna Miller on the cover and with a total of 840 pages!
Thanks to the movie, you also get to know some of the talented people who work for the magazine such as Grace Coddington, André Leon Talley and of course the editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, who is actually not so serious as she seems, although sometimes she can be a little bit tough... She has actually a funny and sarcastic side that I love. There are also appearances by designers such as Thakoon, Jean Paul Gaultier and Karl Lagerfeld.
The central focus of the movie is obviously the September issue, but it goes a little bit further than the Vogue offices and it gives a peek of the past and present of Grace and Anna and especially the influence that Anna has put into the whole Vogue's image.

Every little aspect of the creative process in the making of a magazine is shown in this movie. I realised that working for a fashion magazine is not all glitz and glam, sometimes it can be a little bit stressful. If something doesn’t work as planned like a story or shoot, they have to repeat it again. While watching the movie I was wondering where the amount of articles and photos that they didn't make it into the magazine went… it can be frustrating to be working on something you think it is amazing to then never see the light.

I would recommend this movie if you have always wondered what actually happens inside a big publication like Vogue. I have always been interested in magazines and this movie has taught me how to deal with the people in this industry and also to know how the fashion journalism world works.
